Skip The Sugar: Choose Marquis

By Matthew Pineda December 26, 2020

You don’t have to choose taste over health! Here at Marquis, we took this and ran with it- explicitly making our drinks free from calories, sugar, and guilt. Take a look at why we choose to make Marquis sugar-free!

About Sugar

Here’s the thing about sugar- it occurs naturally in all foods that contain carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables, grains, and dairy. Consuming these whole foods is okay, as they contain high amounts of essential nutrients such as fiber, calcium, and antioxidants. Your body digests these types of foods slower, which means a steady supply of energy is fed to your cells. It’s even been shown that eating a high amount of these whole foods can reduce the risk of some diseases.

But here’s the kicker- the problem occurs when manufacturers add sugar to their food products to extend the shelf life or add more flavor. For many reasons, this high sugar content has grown in popularity in the American diet. Many producers add sugar to energy drinks, cereals, pastries, and even in unexpected foods like soups, bread, dips, and ketchup. We took this and made a conscious decision not to include it in any of our products!

Research is growing on the addictiveness and health concerns of a high-sugar diet. One study found a significant association between high consumption of sweetened beverages and risk of heart failure. Another study found that belly fat percentage was higher for those with a greater sugar intake.

The most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends consuming less than 50 grams of sugar (from all sources) per day (given a 2,000-calorie daily diet). Here’s something to put that into perspective:

  • Coke- 39 grams
  • Flavored Coconut Water- 30 grams
  • Gatorade- 50 grams
  • Caramel Macchiato- 34 grams
  • Red Bull- 37 grams
  • Guayaki Yerba Mate Bluephoria Tea- 28 grams

(Amounts may vary by brand check labels.)

To reiterate- a can of a conventional energy drink would take up almost all your sugar intake for the day! It also translates to many other health concerns.

But this doesn’t mean that all tasty fruit-flavored drinks are bad for us. You just need to be mindful that the drinks you buy are made with real ingredients!

Sweet, No Sugar

Okay, how do we get our drinks to have that sweet, tasty, and refreshing flavor? We choose to skip the sugar altogether and go for a natural alternative, Stevia. Our favorite herb is a plant that grows in South America. The Stevia plant has been used for food and medicinal purposes throughout history. Its leaves and extracts are also sold as dietary supplements.

Stevia is 100 times sweeter than regular sugar, so a little bit can go a long way! Just a pinch of Stevia is equal to about one teaspoon of regular table sugar. The best part is that Stevia contains no calories- that’s right, a natural, calorie-free sweetener. Also, we use a very high-quality strain of stevia extract called Rebiana A 98%, so you know you’re getting the best ingredients.

Although Stevia is great, some people don’t like the after-taste. To resolve this, we blend our stevia with erythritol (er-rith-re-tal) in our drinks. A natural sweetener commonly used with Stevia. It is made from USDA Organic, Non-GMO corn. Erythritol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol produced by fermentation of a carbohydrate substrate. Our erythritol is certified USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Calorie-Free, and registers Zero on the Glycemic Index.

The best part? It’s also carb-free. Although our label has carbs listed, the carbs provided by the erythritol are not absorbed by the body; therefore, Marquis is zero net carbs.
