What is Citrus Yuzu? | Drink Marquis

Pucker up for the tart, sweet sensation of Citrus Yuzu. Marquis Citrus Yuzu is a blend of yuzu, lemons, limes, and tangerines, building a refreshing vacation in a can. We don’t blame you for not being an expert in all things citrus. That’s what we are here for!

Keep reading for a breakdown of one of our favorite Marquis Drinks: Citrus Yuzu! From the ingredients to a killer cocktail recipe, this is how Citrus Yuzu shines!

What Is Yuzu Fruit?

Sour, tart, and fragrant describes the fresh aroma of Yuzu. But you, like many, probably don’t even know what yuzu is. Yuzu is a Japanese citrus lemon. It originated in China almost 1000 years ago and now grows in Japan and a couple of other places around the world.

Small but mighty- this citrus fruit looks like a lemon (slightly smaller than a billiard ball).  It is different from most citrus as it can maintain its tartness and sourness throughout high cooking temperatures. Yuzu is considered a citron - the juice is very minimal, making it rare and often expensive. Yuzu also goes by Citrus junos, belonging to the Rutaceae family of plants (along with the citrus superstars like oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and limes).

What Does Yuzu Taste Like?

“Sour and tart” is the short answer, but there is a lot more to Yuzu! Yuzu has an intense aroma and fragrance!

You don’t want to eat yuzu straight, just like you wouldn’t bite into a lemon or lime (excluding tequila shots, of course). Instead, it is usually used as a souring ingredient from the yuzu juice and yuzu zest. Plus, yuzu is much sourer than most citrus; The flavor is described as a mix between a lemon and grapefruit, making for a unique flavor: floral and sour all at once!

Yuzu is most popular in East Asian cuisines, served as a gourmet flavoring for vinegar, seasonings, sauces, and marmalades to add a bit of tangy zing! Yuzu can be placed on cooked or grilled meat for an extra fresh fruit taste. Yuzu juice can also be squeezed on top for some added natural flavor. Yuzu extract, zest, or juice can be a great add on as salad dressing as well, paired with vinegar or alone. Yuzu can be found in different forms from bottled juice to Japanese yuzu sauce and hot sauce.

Bonus Fact: The yuzu fragrance is so deliciously wonderful the Japanese use it in their perfumes! They will also use yuzu in ritual baths during the winter solstice (Toji).

The oil of the citrus fruit has also traditionally been used as an essential oil. People use it to keep skin smooth and increase circulation.

This fruit may pack a unique punch of citrus but is also touted for being healthy too!

Benefits of Yuzu

First things first, yuzu is low in calories and packs a whole lot of nutrition! Let’s take a closer look: 3.5 oz of yuzu holds only 53 calories, along with Vitamin A, C, B, and other nutritious minerals.

Mood-Boosting

Yuzu is traditionally used for its therapeutic citrus fragrance. People have noticed stress-relieving and mood-boosting properties after using the yuzu fruit. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine looked at the effects of the yuzu scent on women with premenstrual symptoms. Yuzu was connected to improved mood in participants! The yuzu scent is magical. Taking the time to enjoy it may lead to a boost in your day!

Relieves Inflammation

Inflammation is the root of all evil! It is the body’s natural immune response to any injury or damage! The yuzu fruit is high in antioxidants - compounds that can neutralize the free radicals that cause inflammation and disease. Pair yuzu with other anti-inflammatory foods like ginger or veggies for a stacked team against inflammation.

Power of Citrus

We take the best part of yuzu flavor and blend it in a formula of other citrus fruits like lemon, lime, and tangerine! Citrus fruits are nutritious and pack the vitamin C which is known to strengthen your immune system.

Citrus Yuzu can bring a burst of sunshine and summer to a dull day at the office, waking you up with refreshing flavor and the ultimate blend of caffeine.

Our Unique Blend

Sweetened and flavored naturally, we harness the power of natural energy-boosting ingredients: yerba mate, green coffee, and green tea.

Our blend is sustainable and plant-based won’t skimp your caffeine dose! An average cup of coffee (about 8 ounces) contains about 95 milligrams of caffeine. Each can of Marquis contains 100 milligrams of plant-based organic caffeine. Our blend fuels you naturally - without harsh caffeine and sugar. In fact, Marquis contains no sugar at all - which brings us to our next point!

Just because it is healthy doesn’t mean it has to taste like it! Marquis is naturally sweetened with Stevia (a magical plant that contains zero calories). Stevia is 100 times sweeter than regular sugar. Just a pinch of Stevia is equal to about one teaspoon of regular table sugar.

We use Rebiana A 98%, a high-quality strain of stevia. So you get the best of both worlds: sugar-free and sweet!
